walking at 6am in a largely unlit neighborhood, you can only hear other people walking down the street. you may see something -- hardly an outline (there's not enough light), but you can tell it's moving. across the darkness a female voice says 'hello' and waits to see if the sound is echoed. i say hello, too. the situation is neutralized. human contact is made and fears (if they are present) are pacified.
45 minutes later the sun is straddling the horizon. i see a woman approaching. i see her well enough to know that her hair is blonde and that it's unbrushed. i don't know if this is the woman from earlier.
in the safety of the new daylight we pass and do not say hello.
