ARTIST TALK: Thursday, November 16, 6:30 pm
"Trauma, Performance and Documentary: Christina McPhee in conversation with G. H. Hovagimyan"
Multimedia artist Christina McPhee talks with G.H. Hovagimyan on performance, site, and ‘bare life’ in new media documentary. Now on
view, McPhee’s "La Conchita mon amour" is a study of debris flow and
its aftermath, in photography, audio-video installation, drawing and
interactive net. G. H. Hovagimyan's video performances update the
punk rant aesthetic into live and networked media. At Sara Tecchia

La Conchita mon amour (2005-2006) is a site study by Christina McPhee
of the aftermath of a deadly debris that occurred in 2005 in the town
of La Conchita, California, north of Los Angeles. The project’s beta
launch at Sara Tecchia, New York, in October-November 2006, includes photographic montages, video stills and drawings, together with
interactive online project, "La Conchita mon amour" on New York's
www.turbulence.org from November 7, 2006. La Conchita remaps the problematic of living with disaster in California in immediate, raw
terms. Global warming appears to be accelerating the danger. Without
resources fo healing or leaving, La Conchita lives on in abandonment. McPhee's images reach through obsessive layers of visual
data towards an integration beyond the material facts of the site.
The large-scale images that result from this process are topologies
of absence and recovery.
