Brown Beans and Black Magic" is a collection of video works by artist and director Tim Folland, combining aspects of live performance with B-movie magic to create fast paced comedic shorts, crammed with convenience store cultural symbolism and lighthearted mysticism. The focus of this work is the studio preoccupations of the “The Paintor", a down on his luck, low brow wizard. Through this character the artist constructs highly stylized narratives filled with supernatural homebrews, half craft inventions, and free wheeling work sessions that take action painting into the 21st century. Collectively, these works overflow with Folland´s character exploits and private rituals which construct his fantasy world of splintered pop culture tales, exaggerated cartoon drama, and slap stick absurdity.

i am into production on my first-feature length documentary (tentatively titled "The Main") about a gay bar in my hometown. the doc looks at the life and history of the bar and its owner. on a broader scale, the doc is about social changes in small(er) town queer communities. recent attention has been given to the dissolution of historic gay enclaves in larger cities; this project is a case study in similar changes in smaller locations. it also emphasizes the need for archiving small town histories. whereas larger communities have possessed the resources to archive and maintain regional queer history, small communities face a potential loss of their history due to limited archival/history/etc resources.
this project is looking for funding and is now accepting donations (via check or credit card) through its fiscal sponsor, The Center for Independent Documentary. any support is greatly appreciated! there are numerous ways to access The Main's donation page. you can get there through the project's current (temporary) website at: http://www.juliecasperroth.com/mainclub.htm
i can answer any questions that you may have. thank you for your support!

My work is an interactive investigation of the sexual aspects of our culture. My work intends to be direct, whether the result is imagery of nude bodies and sexual paraphernalia, or purely semantic in nature. I seek to generate an intelligent dialog about sex by combining interactivity, playfulness, and humor. My work intends to be more direct and contemporary than commercial erotica, but less singularly focused than pornography’s sex-objects. It's about ephemeral sexual cultures, the private spaces around erotic activities, and how these spaces move through and change with time.
I begin my explorations as interactive animations, designed specifically for the intimate experience of online viewing. Through my work with the inter-media performance group Double Vision, I have the opportunity to re-investigate my work for shared orgiastic experiences as interactive performance installations. And, like taboo snapshots of loved ones, I create printed montages to capture the fundamental essence of the experience of the installations. This imagery is re-incorporated into the original online project, creating a complexly layered experience.
I believe our sexual culture deserves dedicated, creative exploration. Not to document the mechanics of sex, but to tease out the ways it makes our heart race, the way it makes us both embarrassed and ecstatic. Sexual expression reveals of many of our universally shared human experiences. Our imperfect and unconventional bodies are ripe with expressions of honesty, shame, desire, and humor. I use humor within my work to defray the societal tensions that often coalesce around sex.
While sexual prudishness is diminishing, our society still reflects a similar schism, simultaneously sexually obsessed and puritanical. While I obviously believe in personal freedoms and political rights, my work seeks to be more open-ended than propaganda of sexual revolutions. I would rather track the multitude of paths our sexual taboos take; like following the half-hidden veins beneath your lover’s skin. I hope to make the most of this historical transition by creating a playground of discussion around these ironies.

Cliff Evans: Empyrean is a new digital projection by leading
video artist Cliff Evans and the first solo-museum exhibition of the
artist's work. Using images excerpted from the Internet to create an
animated five-panel collage, Evans turns a critical eye on contemporary
American culture and challenges the viewer to confront issues of power,
politics, militarism life-style and control in our society. Infused
with the artist's wry sense of humor and keen eye for color and detail,
Empyrean is as engaging as it is disquieting.
Cliff Evan's work has been shown at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston,
the Maryland Art Place, Baltimore; Creative Research Lab, Austin; and
at Location One, NY. He has also screened at numerous film festivals,
including CinemaTexas and the Brooklyn and Boston Underground Film
Festivals, and his collaborations with composers have at Tanglewood,
Harvard University and the Camberwells Composers' Collective in London.

Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the Nimoy Foundation. The
museum receives operating support from the Massachusetts Cultural

walking at 6am in a largely unlit neighborhood, you can only hear other people walking down the street. you may see something -- hardly an outline (there's not enough light), but you can tell it's moving. across the darkness a female voice says 'hello' and waits to see if the sound is echoed. i say hello, too. the situation is neutralized. human contact is made and fears (if they are present) are pacified.
45 minutes later the sun is straddling the horizon. i see a woman approaching. i see her well enough to know that her hair is blonde and that it's unbrushed. i don't know if this is the woman from earlier.
in the safety of the new daylight we pass and do not say hello.
