Chiaki Watanabe (also known as c.h.i.a.k.i.) is a media artist based in NY. With minimalist and
organic aesthetics, she works in multiple forms including video, motion graphics, installation and
live video performance. She explores the communicational, the affective, the sensory aspects of
audiovisual media. Her fascination lies in integrating the media into various fields such as
performance media, architecture, neuroscience, and psychology. Her work investigates
relationships between synaesthetia and kineasthesia created through the interaction of kinetic
abstract images and related expressions.
Her work has been presented internationally in various venues ranging from media art and video
festivals such as the New York Video Festival, Microcinema International, European Media Art
Festival (DE), Viper New Media Festival (CH) to art institutions including Museum of Modern Art
(US), Institute of Contemporary Arts (UK), Austin Museum of Digital Art, and Kunsthall (NO). She
has performed at venues throughout New York City including Eyebeam, Location One, Dance
Theater Workshop, The Kitchen and Merce Cunningham studio. She has received awards from
Experimental Television Center, Electronic Media and Film Program at the New York State
Council on the Arts and Media the foundation.
