Short Bio:

Dave Hebb is a time-based artist using photography, video and installation to explore the relationships between self, environment and technology by examining industrial artifacts within natural settings over long spans of time.  He has lived, worked and taught throughout the U.S. and Iceland; where he visited as a Fulbright Fellow in 1997.  His work has been exhibited throughout the Catskill and Hudson Valley regions of New York State, as well as across the U.S. and internationally in Iceland and Russia.  Recent notable accomplishments include an outdoor public screening of the video “Monitor” at the Ann Arbor Film Festival and being a selected artist for the NYFA MARK 10 professional development program for artists.  Currently he lives with his wife and family deep in the Catskills, in the small town of Phoenicia, where he continues to contemplate, document and respond to his surroundings.

Title of Submission 1: Wastewater Runoff Pipe
Author of Title 1: Dave Hebb
Title 1 lenght: 7:12
Title 1 Description: This is an endless video loop that sporadically documents a water treatment facility’s wastewater runoff pipe emptying into a local stream near Woodstock, NY. Questions about the long-term global impact that industrialized civilization has on the environment are framed within the context of my own rural surroundings in the Catskill Mountains of New York. This relationship with nature is investigated by contrasting the natural processes of growth and decay with the monolithic artifact of a sewer drainage pipe. I confront the viewer with their own consumption and present it as a metaphor for their relationship with the natural world. The use of a symmetrical formal composition evokes various forms of symbolic sacred art, thus encouraging meditation and metaphysical contemplation.

Title of Submission 2: Monitor
Author of Title 2: Dave Hebb
Title 2 length: 9:54
Ttitle 2 Description: A year-long video and photographic documentation of a computer monitor in a field from October 17th, 2007 to October 17th, 2008. During that time, I performed a burning and minor excavation around the perimeter of the monitor that mirrored its rectangular shape by manipulating perspective and point of view. Over time, the excavation eventually filled in with new growth, asserting the cyclical regenerative power of the seasons in nature over the destructive machinations of mankind. The video is presented as an infinite seamless loop, each loop lasting 5 minutes. This online version loops twice.
