Short Bio:

Born in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, received degrees in poetry and literary theory from Central Michigan University and an interdisciplinary Master of Fine Arts degree from SUNY Buffalo. Currently teaching sculpture, design, and art theory, making artwork focused on absurd performances and objects of skepticism.

Additional Comments:

My practice is driven by a radically skeptical relationship to language. I am not simply skeptical of certain concepts, discourses, or perspectives, but of the very means whereby we articulate all of our certainties and doubts, about ourselves and about our world.

My work deals with different aspects of communication, from simple, personal articulations of ideas and beliefs through actions and utterances, to more complex communal communications expressed through media and technology. I am also interested in the communication of the social, as in the ways we are conditioned by the laws, traditions and behavioral norms of state and cultural institutions. I am especially interested in the communication of power as it is exercised both symbolically and physically, from the soft power of a government's theatrical authority, information controls and economic policies, to the hard power of its policing, punishment, and legitimate violence.

I aim for legibility, but also mean to emphasize all the ambiguity and contradiction that assertive, didactic language can so readily obscure. In my installation and sculpture, I am creating something both intelligible and questionable. I want the terms of my work to be clear, but make no assumption about answers to the questions raised or implications suggested. As my objects express ideas of absurdity, my video performance work represents my struggle to make sense of my feelings of absurdity. By enacting and enduring difficult and repetitive metaphors for the mundane routines imposed upon all of us by the everyday requirements of living, I feel that I am able to make physically manifest my commitment to life and work despite their appearances of vanity and absurdity. I hope that the performances good-natured ridiculousness and earnest durations impart to viewers a tireless affirmation of living, even in the face of its sometimes-apparent meaninglessness and often-justifiable despair.

My work is essentially a work of philosophy, but due to a deep-seated mistrust of language, rhetoric, and the ends to which they may lead us, it is an inquiry I can maintain only via the sculptural, the physical, and the performative. I seek to create a dialogue where the questions are posed as objects, where the answers arrive not as words, but as acts.

hi dietmar!
your work seems great, but unfortunately we only had one spot left and I already said yes to another person. I got many interested people contacting me today!
but I would love to have you on the next series.
please register on www.artreview.com (which is a wonderful network website, you'll see) and then become a member of the Video Artists group. There we have all the discussions concerning the project, which is really growing a lot.
cheers,
kika

Hi Dietmar! I've taken a quick look at your new artist statement - yes, more detailed. Will have to read it with more attention in the following days.
Of course i'm in love with Barcelona!!! I'm collaborating with VideoArtWorld (<http://www.videoartworld.com/beta/home.php>), a new project whose offices are close to my house.
Do stop by at Escudellers, 33 (have you checked my new vid - it's an intimate look on the street where i live)!

Hi Dietmar!Here i am finally:))
Sorry for just now answering you, the fact is life's hard when one's trying to settle down in a whole new place. But i think now i may start calling Barcelona a 'home'.
As for your new works - i've checked the 3 you've produced this year and was quite astonished with "Give and Take"! (i'm sure it'll work great on a very large screen); "Standard..." and "Over..." follow the aesthetics so to speak that you've been creating. I would very much like to read a detailed "description" on the main idea behind all your works. I know that you're "focused on absurd performance and skeptical objects", but why?
You could probably send the videos to Videolab (the full length and an excerp version as well) - we might use them in future events.

Stay well!
