In recent work of mine I’ve been curious about the human andscientific intervention and interpretation of culture and the natural world -the control of it and validity of science as a truth replacing religion asfaith. These quantifications ofteninvolve set-ups or tools to illustrate or test the limits or perception of anissue. Often satirizing existing or antiquated tools and methods, Ihave been constructing artifacts where form tends to trump function and renderstheir use ambiguous to the point where they are almost absurd or possiblyutterly useless. Rejectedprototypes, items not living up to their promise and recalled, the tensionderived between contrasting elements or between practical application and pureaesthetics. Over-engineered in oneway but failing to deliver in another. The item as object, be itinteractive or static, created with a veneer of elegance in false hope tovalidate it. -Object as fetish. With motion picture I tend toset-up a situation and allow the elements inside attempt to cope how they seefit. A futility in the age oflogic and technology. In a sense,trying to dig one’s way out of the morass. |
