"I use a digital photocamera, a magnifying glass, pen, paper, voice and various instruments to create small pieces of everyday surrealism on my laptop. By compressing the specific repetitive and time related playground that I consider as everyday life into a compact and often very short form, I hope to show a fragment of a dream or a thought. A small moment in the mind that comes out of nowhere.."
Iris Piers was born in Haarlem, Holland on midwinter in 1983. After dropping out of highschool she studied BA Fine Arts in Rotterdam as well as BA painting at the Kunsthochshule in Berlin. In summer 2006 she was in New York City at a residency at The School of Visual Arts. She finished her art studies in 2006.
Debuting with video performance on Berlin media festival Transmediale along side her Swedish musician friends, she started a career making live cinema with material she shot while travelling through Europe, creating video and sound tracks live with laptop, mixer and midi devices. More than 40 performances and collaborations later her short film work became more in focus and from 2006 this has been her main discipline. She has collaborated with other artists and musicians, yet prefers to travel and process her experiences by working alone with her photo camera and laptop. In that way the process from filming to editing, from making sound recordings to composing the soundtrack stay with her; they can travel with her wherever she goes. In the last 2 years she has been busy with screenings, exhibitions and video/audio performances in Rotterdam, Berlin, Malmö, Stockholm, Prague, Portland, Mexico City, Tokyo, LA, NYC and many other places around the globe. She was recently honoured to win the award for best Best Online Film at the Dutch Film Festival (Nederlands Film Festival). In 2007, she has been partly represented by LMAK projects in NYC, owned by Dutch gallerist Louky Keijser. Also, she is 'artist at large' for New York based video art portal [PAM]. Inbetween her travels she lives in a small garden house between the North Sea and Amsterdam. For more info look http:// www.irispiers.com Upcoming Shows in 2008:
