Artistic Statement of Amelia Winger-Bearskin
In my body of work, I explore the decline of quality and meaning of communication in our society. I find heightened and new forms of communication to express cultural ideas. I look at the collisions of cultures and oftentimes question stereotypical ways of communicating. I view culture as hybrid, as a mix of ethnicities, races, cultures, and backgrounds.
Because culture is hybrid, there is no common history that tells us how to act toward, respond to, or connect with each other. As an artist I am interested in inventing contexts of unity and understanding. I do this by employing visual signs and sonic signals that can create more advanced levels of communication.
I am drawn to the idea of the hybrid, not only because I am from a mixed-race heritage but also because I see video as a hybrid format. Video, like the human voice, can spread through a variety of media. Easily shared, videos can be useful in experimental hybrid conversations and addressing my desired audience by using new technology and non-traditional formats. I experiment with human connection by using human bodies as union and human vocal intonation as a soundtrack.
In my most recent pieces, I am interested in how one can use cultural references to examine the cult of the individual and how it relates to pop culture celebrity. I align my video and performance work with other viral mass-media tools of expression, with a desire to mirror and advance an increasingly interactive audience/creator environment.

sorry I missed you. Paul Chan Rocks the house.
Too bad you couldn't make the teleculture show. Lee really did an awsome job in curating.
Speaking of paul chan there's a piece in teleculture that is amazing - dual projector and fills the whole staircase of the gallery
Check out:"AmalgamideTide"
it reminds me of chan's 1st light
just watched Death Proof - which takes place in Austin - was think'in 'bout ya !

Hi globetrotting Ms Bearskin, glad to see you're back around. Hope things are as good as good gets. I made it to the Chelsea opening, got to meet Chris and Lee, but due to technical difficulties, etc. Take care, burn down a building or punch a bigot.
