"Reflexion Obscura" is a video work about child abuse. It seeks to evoke the viewer’s empathy for the true darkness felt by an abused child. Many children are physically and emotionally abused in the world, by family members, and by governments, businesses, and schools. Tales of mentally ill parents and helpless children are commonplace in the media and oversimplify the dangers of child abuse. They encourage fear and wariness. American society’s obsession with youth has made childhood into an abstract perfection for many people. This turns the accounts of abuse that we hear into simplistic stories of good and evil. It hides the strange darkness and complex causes of the problem, such as our cultural fixation on youth that can lead to individuals’ obsessions with the young.
I took many cues from the child in the video, trying to preserve the strange feeling that she gives to her enactment. The energy of the child’s imagination became a medium for my reflections on this topic. I can more fully understand the forgotten pain by seeing it surface in the play of the child. It’s strangeness reminds us that we do not view children as real people so much as dolls or as reflections of ourselves. I want the audience to come to understand children’s pain (both physical and emotional) and their complex experience of the darkness of abuse. I hope to allow the feelings of each viewer to emerge according to their own experience. In remembering the darkness of being an injured child, they may see the light of being a healthy adult. |

Between Heaven and Earth was originally inspired by my experiences exploring the Fjörds, a large, mountainous region in Central Western Norway. Attracted by these natural mysteries, I learned about a community of inhabitants that live within the crevices of the mountain peaks. Since these people live very high in the mountains, it was impossible for me to communicate directly with them. However, the natives who lived at the base were able to relate wonderful stories of extraordinary living conditions, which further triggered my imagination concerning the existence that they have with their surroundings. In the presence of that landscape, a desire was born to share their experiences. I became fascinated with the way those people live, how they respond to an environment that often threatens avalanches and how younger generations cope with, or revolt against, the hardships of their parents’ chosen life. If all the young people left, the place would eventually become “empty.”
Although my work is based on a specific geographic location and its inhabitants, the concepts of attraction, loss and the feelings generated by a particular environment are very universal. As I worked on this video, I became unable to ignore the parallels I saw with the living environments around me in New York. Specifically I focused on the public housing projects of the city. I found important social and economic themes rising from the common images of the Fjords and of the high rises. The uncomfortable environmental conditions endured by living at these elevations, and the separation of a group of people from the surrounding community. From this isolation and difficulty has arisen strong community, which is always threatened by the movement of the youth. In addition to the commonalities between these two subcultures, the differences are striking. One life is entirely of the land, the other entirely of civilization, and the hardships of each life differ along this line.
The soundtrack was recorded by singer Susana Baca specifically for this installation. Through this video, I explore the parallel stories of these two communities, and try to express my feelings of wonder at lifestyles that I will never be able to fully understand. |

In this work I am exploring my experience on Flatey, Iceland. When we arrived, we greatly increased the population of the remote island. A key part of this trip was trying to overcome our feelings of isolation and foreignness by exploring the island’s natural habitat.
The rocks on the shores of Flatey were covered with thick and textured algae like I had never seen before. The colors and the immensity of these piles were overwhelming. They were aesthetically beautiful, yet I couldn’t explore the shores nor go swimming without stepping in and around the vegetation. This limitation enhanced my internal sensation of being confined; yet, like the algae, I cannot be connected to any one place.
The work intends to express certain feelings of isolation and attempts to convey characteristics of the actual experience, rather than explorations or descriptions. Icelandic composer Hilmar Orn Hilmarsson created the soundtrack for this project. |
