Title of Submission 1: Death By Water
Author of Title 1: Maya Ciarrocchi
Title 1 Publication Date: 08-01-07
Title 1 lenght: 20:00
Title 1 Description: Part of a three-channel work titled Wasteland, Death By Water, explores urban landscape and seascape, turning the familiar upside down, literally and figuratively. Using classic shots of New York City icons, Ciarrocchi creates inverted images where the water becomes the sky and cityscapes become cloud formations. The viewer experiences an immediate disconnectedness as the eye tries to correct and organize the inversion into a type of order leading to a disturbing sense of illusion. Fusing the familiar and the strange, the ethos of The Wasteland, someone trying to make sense of a known yet unreal world, connects to the artist’s own feelings of ambivalence towards The City, the environment in which she lives. Taking the scenic and turning it on its head, Ciarrocchi explores the foreignness in what is known by exposing the mysterious and the unreal of the everyday.
