Myexperiments in video and photography responded to a series of visits that I didto the sugar factories throughout all of Puerto Rico in the year 2002. Thoseoff spaces, according to the French Anthropologist Marc Augé, are lost of thecollective memory, lost in our files, lack of life and without a surprise areresidues of boiling Industrial era. These spaces are places that invite me toinitiate a new conversation with a contemporary point of view that deals withthe theme of the residue and excesses, between the homogenous and heterogenicthings. These spaces and off spaces are two false polarities. They arepalimpsests in which the aspects of the place identity are rewritten one timeand another. These places are transformed in charged spaces of the historyeffects. For this reason, I took these spaces to make a reflection andaesthetizise this forgotten site. These spaces become habitable spaces from non-habitable spaces partingfrom the point of view of the residue. |
